President Barack Obama thought resistance to the Affordable Care Act would dissolve after the elections of 2010, says former Sen. Olympia Snowe.

"He thought the opposition to it would lessen after the election," the Maine Republican said in an interview with Julie Mason, host of Sirius XM Radio's "Press Pool," The Hill reports.

"I said, 'It's just the beginning.' I said, 'It's going to grow because I can tell you it's not going to go away, and it's going to get worse,'" Snowe said.

Obama tried unsuccessfully to coax Snowe into supporting the bill, hoping for bipartisan support, which he never got.

Snowe, who retired in January, said she informed the president that the implementation problems "would just exacerbate and aggravate the opposition and those who were opposed to it to begin with."
