Sen. Sherrod Brown is getting attention as a contender for the vice president slot on a Democratic presidential ticket if Hillary Clinton cinches the nomination to match the populist appeal of Sen. Bernie Sanders — and Donald Trump, The Hill reports.

With Sanders' decisive win in the Rust Belt state of Michigan, and Trump's appeal to white, working-class voters not only within the Republican Party but also among independents and moderate Democrats, a selection of the Ohio lawmaker makes sense.

For example, The Hill notes some 20,000 registered Democrats in Massachusetts switched their party affiliation ahead of the state's March 2 primary, which state officials attributed to Trump's appeal among blue-collar voters.

In Michigan, Clinton won just 42 percent of the white vote versus Sanders's 56 percent — a divide that widened among white men who voted 62-37 percent in favor of Sanders. Among independent voters, Sanders had a crushing 71 percent, The Hill reports.

"The problem we have is that, if Sen. Sanders is the nominee, you have one that can resonate … with white working-class voters, but not black voters," activist minister Al Sharpton said at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, The Hill reports.

"You can't win without black and Latino voters. Mrs. Clinton has won black voters all over [the country] … but she has to deal with a message that will resonate with working class. So the balance is what has to happen, and so far neither candidate has shown enough of that balance."

But Brown isn't buying the buzz.

"I do not want to be vice president," he said in an email to The Hill, the outlet reports. "I love working for the people of Ohio, and I have a lot more work to do as their senator."
