President Barack Obama's top money man is said to be eyeing a run against New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Politico reports Obama's commander-in-chief's budget director, Shaun Donovan, who also served as Housing and Urban Development secretary, may throw his hat in the ring in the 2017 Democratic primary race.

Putting a fly in the ointment in de Blasio's plans to seek a second term is the fact that Bradley Tusk, former Mayor Mike Bloomberg's adviser and campaign manager, is in Donovan's corner.

Tusk has launched NYC Deserves Better, a grassroots group aiming to slam the current mayor and promote Donovan.

"People want the competency of Bloomberg, but they want something that's more progressive," Tusk told Politico.

One minus for Donovan, a native New Yorker, is that while politically savvy, he's never run for elected office before. Politico adds that Donovan hasn't resided in New York since 2008 and lacks "deep ties" to the African-American and Latino communities.
