Sen. Jeff Sessions welcomed marijuana legalization advocates into his Senate office on Thursday, not know that some sneaked the contraband drug past Capitol Hill security, The Washington Times reports.

At least two of the more than 20 legalization activists smuggled pot into Sessions' Russell Building office, where one proceeded to openly roll a joint while others spoke with the senator's communications director, Chris Jackson, about the medical use of marijuana, and their issue with federal prohibition of the substance.

Jackson declined to partake, according to the report.

"If you're not going to arrest people in your own office who bring marijuana . . . why would you break down people's doors as a federal policy?" Adam Eidinger, organizer for D.C. Cannabis Campaign, asked during the demonstration Thursday.

Sessions, who said in April that Congress must send the message that "good people don't smoke marijuana," is President-elect Donald Trump's choice for U.S. attorney general. His nomination concerned legalization advocates, who worry Sessions will use his authority to damage retail marijuana outlets in the eight states where it's legal.

"There definitely will be a major campaign to block Sen. Sessions' nomination," Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the pro-legalization Drug Policy Alliance, told U.S. News & World Report. "Sessions' nomination represents a disaster for all we fought for.

"The marijuana industry is such a new and young industry that they have yet to achieve all that much political sophistication and they have not shown themselves as yet at being effective at organizing to influence national policy," Nadelmann added. "But the nomination of Sessions is undoubtedly the wakeup call they needed."
