A bipartisan coalition of 22 senators Wednesday backed legislation opposing last month's U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israel for its settlement activity in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and called on the United States to veto any similar decrees in the future.

The legislation calls for the resolution to be either "repealed or fundamentally altered so that it is no longer one-sided and allows all final status issues toward a two-state solution to be resolved through direct bilateral negotiations between the parties," among other actions.

The Security Council voted Dec. 23 to condemn Israeli settlements the in the areas — and the Obama administration came under fire for abstaining on the 14-0 vote.

The White House's move came a day after President-elect Donald Trump called on Obama to veto the resolution, which was also opposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Wednesday's legislation was introduced by Republican Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Marco Rubio of Florida, and Democrat Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland.

Its 19 co-sponsors include Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas, and Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York.

Among the other GOP members are Sens. Joni Ernst of Iowa, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, John McCain of Arizona and Rob Portman of Ohio; Democrats include Sens. Michael Bennet of Colorado, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania.

In addition, the bill would reject any further efforts by the United Nations or related agencies to impose sanctions or other economic measures on Israel and calls on the United States to veto any future U.N. resolutions that would bring the global organization into the Mideast peace process.
