Sen. Angus King, a Maine independent and previous two-term governor of the Pine Tree State, has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president, saying he couldn't trust Donald Trump with nuclear weapons.

"Realizing the incredible importance of the presidency, particularly in foreign policy … where Congress is largely abdicated, I've got to vote for Hillary Clinton," King told interviewer Chris Cuomo on CNN's "New Day" program.

King, 72, said his decision came after a recent visit to Andrews Air Force base for nuclear-attack practice drills, during which he flew in a jet that would serve as a "National Airborne Operations Center" in the event of a cataclysmic ground attack.

"What got me, it was almost physical. In that situation, there is only one person. There's no checks and balances, no Congress, no Supreme Court, no consultation. There's one person making a decision about the future of civilization," King told Cuomo.

"My knees were a little weak with that realization how much power is in this one person. And then I thought about Donald Trump. It's a question of judgment and temperament. This guy has not demonstrated to me the kind of coolness that you need in that situation . . .

"I just can't in good conscience put somebody in that airplane whose coolness and sort of patience and judgment I have doubts about."

King added he was impressed by Clinton's cool and "solid" performance during the grueling congressional hearings on the Benghazi attacks.

"Sitting at the Benghazi hearings for something like 11 hours, [she] never lost her temper, never lost her cool, never lost her patience, answered every question and was very solid," King said.

"I think most people, even people who were opposed to her felt that was an amazing performance. That's as good as you're going to get as a photograph of somebody making decisions under pressure."

King's endorsement puts him at odds with Maine's current governor, Paul LePage, who has enthusiastically endorsed Trump.
