President-elect Donald Trump has told Mitt Romney he will not be tapped for secretary of state, a Bloomberg political reporter tweeted Monday night.

According to Bloomberg, Trump called the former Massachusetts governor Monday to tell him he was not getting the job.

Romney later used his Facebook page to announce his elimination.

The decision leaves Exxon Mobil Corp. Chief Executive Officer Rex Tillerson as the leading contender, Bloomberg reported, noting Trump praised him during his Fox News interview Sunday.

Bloomberg, citing an unnamed source, said Trump is likely to offer Tillerson the post.

Trump tweeted he will announce his decision Tuesday.

Trump's consideration of Romney — who once called Trump a "phony" — to serve as the nation's top diplomat created a split within his inner circle.

Other State Department contenders included Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, and former CIA Director David Petraeus.
