Gorka: Mosul Victory Significant After Trump's Win

The news that Iraq has declared the city of Mosul liberated is significant coming just 24 weeks after President Donald Trump took office, White House deputy assistant Sebastian Gorka said Tuesday.

"If you recall, after the former administration pulled out our forces in 2011 out of Iraq, just two, three years later, in the summer of 2014, ISIS declared the new caliphate out of Mosul," Gorka told Fox News' "Fox & Friends."

Mosul became the epicenter of the ISIS caliphate, said Gorka, but after just a few months after Trump took office, "with our partners in Iraq, we've routed them from the place where they created the new caliphate ... it's just the beginning, but a huge success."

The change came, said Gorka, because troops were able to use standard rules of engagement.

"We jettisoned the idea that you have, like in Vietnam, the '8,000-mile screwdriver,' and that we're going to sit here telling people what to do in the theater," said Gorka. "That's insane. We don't do that. That's [Barack] Obama strategy. We said we trust you. The president trusts our military. They've been trained to do this job."

Another big difference was expressed by Defense Secretary James Mattis, said Gorka, noting that he had said the United States was not there to "degrade the enemy" but to "annihilate them. That's why you can see such rapid changes."

The war against ISIS comes down to a simple question or Iraq, he continued: "Do you think your future, the future of your children and your grandchildren will be better served by an Iraq that sticks together or by maintaining sectarian violence?"

The answer is easy, he added, and that's "we stick together, or we hang together."

The White House, however, is taking reports that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead, said Gorka.

"Do you remember how many reports we had about [Osama] bin Laden being dead or bin Laden being on dialysis?" said Gorka. "The fact is, we have an amazing intelligence community in America, the best in the world. We will verify. We will look at the intelligence available, whether it's signals intelligence, imagery intelligence, and we will give a statement when we have the requisite facts. But right now, remember, the first rule of war. All initial reports are erroneous."
