Rep. Taylor: Venezuela's Downfall Could Destabilize Neighbors

There is a "tremendous amount of potential" for destabilization in the countries around Venezuela if its decline continues, but it is good that those countries are joining forces as the country continues its downward spiral, Rep. Scott Taylor said Monday.

"We met with the presidents of Colombia, Peru, Dominican Republic, and Haiti," the Virginia Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"Venezuela is making threats against Colombia to mask the disintegration of its domestic sector, of course ... Peru obviously is also concerned. They are allied with us as well as Colombia."

Peru's foreign minister is meeting with his counterparts in the region on Tuesday to talk about escalating actions against Venezuela because of the disintegration of democracy, said Taylor, and also talking about potentially severing diplomatic ties.

The United States, meanwhile, needs "to pay more attention to our backyard," said Taylor.

"Haiti and the Dominican Republic, we spoke to those presidents," he said. "They are not as strong as we would like them to be. They would absolutely be affected because of oil shipments. There is a tremendous amount of potential for destabilization in the region. We have to keep very much abreast of [it]."

Taylor also commented on people such as Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, who said in 2011 that the American dream is "more apt to be realized in south America as such places as Ecuador, Argentina where incomes are actually more equal today."

"With all due respect, he should go spend a month in Venezuela and look for toilet paper," said Taylor. "I feel terrible for the people of Venezuela and what's going on there again, the reduction of democracy, the house arrests that are happening and other arrests the opposition. It's a tragedy. I mean, Sen. Sanders is out of this world if he thinks that is the American dream. That is the opposite of the American dream."
