Russia's first visible retaliation against new U.S. sanctions were swift: Its government authorities Thursday ordered the closure of the Anglo-American School of Moscow, CNN reported, citing an unnamed U.S. official.

The school serves children of U.S., British and Canadian embassy personnel. The order closes the facility to U.S. and foreign nationals – and also shutters access to the U.S. embassy vacation house in Serebryany Bor, near Moscow, CNN reported.

The K-12 school has about 1,250 students from 60 countries, according to its website. Students are currently on winter break.

The school shutdown comes in the wake of President Barack Obama's announcement earlier Thursday to expel 35 Russian diplomats, and close two Russian compounds in New York and Maryland to punish Moscow for harassment against American diplomats and cyberattacks that interfered in the presidential election.
