A day after his primary victory, Sen. Marco Rubio challenged U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy to six debates and requested that at least one of the debates be sponsored by a Spanish-language outlet, according to Politico.

"I am asking you to join me in committing to six media-sponsored live debates between now and Election Day. Just as we did in 2010, at least one of these debates should be sponsored by a Spanish language media outlet," Rubio wrote. "I hope you accept this offer and I look forward to your response."

Within a couple of hours, Murphy's campaign issued a statement stating that the Florida Democrat accepted the request. The statement further slammed Rubio for saying he can't commit to serving an entire six-year term.

"His challenge today is nothing more than a desperate attempt to try and change the campaign narrative from the fact that he abandoned Florida," Murphy said. "I have a counter challenge: Senator Rubio, commit to serving a six-year term."

"Clearly, Marco Rubio doesn't understand that campaigning and debating isn't governing. Floridians deserve better than Marco Rubio, and that difference will be on display in the upcoming debates, including the Leadership Florida debate on October 26."

Earlier this week, Rubio had stated in an interview to CNN that he would not commit to serving his full, six-year term if re-elected. "No one can make that commitment because you don't know what the future's going to hold in your life personally or politically," he said.

While the similarity is that both Rubio and Murphy skipped debates with their primary rivals and both went on to huge wins, the former Republican presidential candidate beat Carlos Beruff by almost 54 points on Tuesday and Murphy overpowered fellow Congressman Alan Grayson by 41 points. However, Rubio has led Murphy in the last nine polls taken since July 1.

A "confident" Rubio believes that the 33-year-old congressman is not prepared for the big stage and a debate of this stature. To spice it up, the bilingual Rubio has thrown in a Spanish-language challenge.
