Former President Barack Obama and his administration were oblivious to the reality regarding the Islamic State (ISIS), a hurdle put in place that President Donald Trump needs to overcome, Sen. Ron Johnson said in a new interview.

During an appearance on "Full Measure" that airs Sunday, Johnson — the chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs — told host Sharyl Attkisson Trump is already doing the right thing by recognizing America's enemy and hiring the right people to work around him.

"Whether it's President Obama, it starts at the top, calling ISIS or referring to ISIS as 'the JV team,' it's just that denial of reality," the Wisconsin Republican said. "When it comes to Islamic terror, when it comes to our debt and deficit, my guess is this administration, when you look at the appointments to his Cabinet, these are individuals from the private sector that have to solve problems dealing with real information, not denying reality.

"So certainly I'm hopeful that the new administration will approach the world fact-based, not afraid to acknowledge these realities and act accordingly."

Johnson said that the U.S. must defeat ISIS in order to stop both lone wolf and "wolf pack" attacks, both of which occur on a regular basis across the world. Getting rid of the problem that is the ISIS terror group, he surmised, begins by taking the threat seriously.

"We have to address it by taking it seriously enough and acknowledge the reality that Islamic terror is a growing, metastasizing, evolving problem and we have to address it, because it's impossible to be 100 percent perfect here in the U.S.," he said.

Johnson, who began serving in the Senate in 2011, told Attkisson Trump has to reestablish America's credibility around the world, something he said former President Ronald Reagan had to do when he took office following the Carter administration.

During a speech at CPAC last month, Trump vowed to "totally obliterate ISIS. Working with our allies, we will eradicate this evil from the face of the earth."

"Full Measure" airs Sunday on Sinclair stations nationwide, and is streamed live on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. ET at FullMeasure.news.
