Donald Trump could win the presidency, considering rival Hillary Clinton's unfavorable ratings and the volatile nature of the race, says 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney, who doesn't support either candidate.

But then again, Trump could lose by a landslide, Romney said in a podcast earlier this month, reports Buzzfeed.

"To be honest, it's very possible in my view that Trump wins," the former Massachusetts governor told Republican consultant Mike Murphy on his Radio Free GOP podcast, released before the two candidates convention started. "I wouldn't think it'd be by a landslide, but I think he could win. I think he could lose, I think he could lose by a landslide. But, I don't know which it's going to be and a lot of that depends on what happens to Hillary Clinton. Is there a meltdown moment, or some implosion of some kind?"

Romney said he isn't going to vote for either Trump or Clinton, and will look at Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein. But if he doesn't like either of them, he said, he may end up writing in another Republican.

Romney did give Trump some credit, after several months of bashing the unconventional GOP nominee.

"You have to give Donald Trump credit, he was able to bring a rhetoric and a style that he had perfected over his career to the political sphere and connect with people and become the nominee," Romney told Murphy. "Despite the fact that I and a lot of other people thought he would not be an ideal nominee, he is. At this stage, it's rougher going, but I can't predict what's gonna happen."

Romney said that he never really thought Trump would become the nominee, but believes that he was able to slip through without much scrutiny because of the large number of Republicans who were seeking the nomination.

However, he said that Clinton comes across as "not being at all authentic," and called her a "player" and an "awful candidate" who people don't trust.

"I don't understand why it is she can't be what I had expected her to be, which is Angela Merkel or Kathleen Sebelius," Romney said."There are serious women leaders who don't go into an audience and put their arms up in the air and make a big guffaw kind of smile. It's almost like she's acting like she's Bill Clinton and she's not Bill Clinton. Nonetheless, it doesn't come across well."
