With less than a week to go until the Electoral College meets to cast their votes on Dec. 19, the Republican National Committee is overseeing an expansive whip operation to ensure that the 306 Republican electors actually vote for President-elect Donald Trump, Politico reports.

The RNC insists that only one GOP elector is at risk of not voting for Trump after it has contacted all of them several times to check the situation, sources said. The committee has also monitored the social media of the electors to guard against the chance of any defections.

The effort was deemed necessary because a movement led by a mostly Democratic group calling itself Hamilton Electors is trying to convince at least 37 of the 306 Republican electors currently pledged to Trump, to instead support a moderate Republican.

That would leave the real estate mogul less than the 270 electors needed for victory and throw the presidential election into the House of Representatives, Salon reports.

A RNC source insisted to Politico, however, that the attempt by the Hamilton Electors will fail, because "it's a matter of personal pride for a state party chairman and a state party to ensure that all the electors that their people elected vote, and vote in the manner in which they're supposed to."

Many electors have reported that thousands of emails have been sent to them each day imploring them to reject Trump.

However, even the leaders of the Hamilton Electors acknowledge that their chances are slim, especially since many GOP electors who criticized Trump during the campaign say they will vote for him.

One of them, Charlie Potts in Oklahoma, summed up the reasoning, telling Politico:

"I would prefer that another person had been nominated by the Republican Party and had won the election, but am I going to go against 14 million [primary voters] who voted for Trump? And am I going to vote against all the people in Oklahoma who voted two-to-one for Trump? No, that's just stupid."

Another problem faced by the Hamilton Electors is that two GOP electors who say they will not vote for Trump have announced that they will resign, but the rules state that someone else will take their place and vote for Trump anyway.
