Newly-elected Montana Rep. Greg Gianforte was correct in issuing an apology for an alleged assault against a reporter, Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel said Thursday.

"Congressman-elect Greg Gianforte was right to apologize for his actions… tonight's apology was a good first step toward redemption and I hope Gianforte continues to work toward righting his wrong," McDaniel said in a statement, according to The Hill.

"Once again, voters responded to President Trump's call to protect the hard work this administration has done to reform a burdensome tax code, cut onerous regulations and relieve hardworking taxpayers across the country from the rising costs of Obamacare," she added.

Gianforte, a Republican, won a special election in Montana Thursday to replace former Rep. Ryan Zinke, who left the seat to serve as secretary of the Interior.

Gianforte apologized to Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs for a physical encounter between the two on Wednesday.

"Last night I made a mistake and I took an action that I can't take back — and I'm not proud of what happened. I should not have treated that reporter that way, and for that, I am sorry, Mr. Ben Jacobs."

Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin announced Wednesday that Gianforte had been charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly grabbing Jacobs by the neck and throwing him to the ground.

When Gianforte gave his apology at his victory speech, some of his supporters yelled that they forgave him, according to The New York Times.
