Donald Trump's high-profile Cabinet pick of Rex Tillerson as secretary of state is a reflection of the president-elect himself: a man of "strength" who "walks in a room and commands respect," Politico reported.

When Trump and the Exxon Mobil CEO met in Trump Tower on Dec. 6, "they hit it off" immediately, sharing the experience of having made billion-dollar deals and running multinational companies, an unnamed source told Politico.

"He's totally the Trump M.O.," the source told Politico. "Strong guy. . . . As soon as he met him, he told people that Tillerson is the kind of guy that walks in a room and commands respect. [Trump] Liked [Mitt] Romney. Liked Rudy [Giuliani]. But Tillerson was a stronger guy. He liked his strength."

Another unnamed source added Trump "liked the outsized, Texan, can-do swagger" of Tillerson.

Tillerson would be the presumptive pick within days of their initial meeting, and the official one within a week, Politico reported.

The process beforehand was long and hard, with Giuliani and Romney early favorites, and the list expanding and contracting, Politico reported.

On Nov. 30, however, Condoleezza Rice met with Vice President-elect Mike Pence in Washington, D.C., emerging as a "surprise influencer," Politico reported.

Rice and former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who met with Trump on Dec. 2 in New York, both recommended Tillerson be considered as secretary of state, Politico reported, citing unnamed sources.

"Trump seemed surprised and intrigued," a source close to Gates said of the Tillerson suggestion, Politico reported.

But once the decision was made – even as some Republicans raised concerns about Tillerson's ties to Russia and its president Vladimir Putin – Trump was not dissuaded.

"Everyone knows this is going to be our toughest confirmation, but I don't think Trump was going to change his mind at the end of the day," an unnamed transition official told Politico.
