Rep. Tim Ryan: Democrats Can't Just Block Trump

MSNBC's "Morning Joe"

Democratic leaders have an obligation to sit down with President-elect Donald Trump and determine how they can combine efforts to help working-class people, Rep. Tim Ryan, R-Ohio, said Thursday.

"He won," Ryan told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"We can't sit here and act like we're just going to obstruct from the very beginning. My personal example, a lot of people voted for me and voted for Donald Trump. Voted for [West Virginia Sen. Joe] Manchin, voted for Donald Trump."

Ryan, coming off a losing challenge against Rep. Nancy Pelosi, R-Calif., for the House Minority Leader seat, said he has noticed some changes occurring in his party, including mentioning blue collar workers and the working class more in the last couple of weeks than have been mentioned in a long time.

That is a lesson learned in the presidential election.

"It starts with your rhetoric, how you talk to people, where you go, and where you are, and being with people who are working class and understanding," Ryan said. "We just had an issue with coal workers and their pensions. You know, a lot of Democrats were advocating for that."

However, Ryan said neither he nor a fellow lawmaker, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, could get the measure into continuing funding, "but we were fighting for those coal workers, Democrats were, and Republicans left them on the outside."

Ryan said he would advise Pelosi to move toward the future by continuing to speak about working-class issues and to not slice the electorate by race, religion or sex.

"We have this robust economic message," he said. "It needs to be about how do we rebuild this country?"
