The nation's broken tax code will be fixed in 2017, even if Democrats won't participate in the reform efforts, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady said Friday.

"I would love to have the Democrats on board," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program. "They know the economy is struggling. Actually, they have got, we think, some good ideas. I don't know if they will engage or not."

The bottom line, though, is that later this year, Republicans will use a budget process reconciliation process to hold a "straight up or down vote," and if Democrats won't engage, "we're not going to hold up fixing this broken tax code because they're mad."

Brady's suggestion to reform and simplify taxes consists of three tax brackets and is only 14 lines long, Fox News' Steve Doocy noted.

"We are proposing a code so simple, nine out of 10 Americans will be able to use a postcard-style system," Brady said.

The revised code plans do include deductions for mortgage interest, charitable contributions, and more, said Brady.

"We love people giving to their church and the causes they believe in," Brady said. "Their homes are the biggest investment most people make. We also keep help for raising kids and saving for college, which is really important for families."

First, though, the House will need to work on repealing and replacing Obamacare, Brady said, "because it's also a job killer." Meanwhile, he said, President Donald Trump is the first president in 30 years to lead the way for tax reform.
