Rand Paul: McConnell's Not the Problem, Democrats Are

By    |   Wednesday, 11 Dec 2013 06:26 PM

If there is a split among Kentucky Republicans, Sen. Rand Paul has no desire to step into the fray.

Appearing Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto," Paul said he supports his fellow Kentucky GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell, who is under attack by tea party groups.

McConnell appeared on Cavuto's show Tuesday, insisting he did not mean to cast aspersions on all tea party members when he said the Senate Conservatives Fund was hurting the GOP. The group supports Paul but is backing McConnell's primary opponent Matt Bevin.

Paul told Cavuto he has endorsed McConnell and thinks money should be focused on opposing Democrats who favored Obamacare, such as Sens. Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana.

"I'd rather direct our resources toward trying to take over a Republican majority than trying to eat our own," Paul said.

Cavuto noted to Paul that the Senate Conservatives Fund "love you to death. So, methinks there is a split in Kentucky."

"Growing pains is a better way of putting it," Paul said. Parties struggle when they lose a presidential election, he said, and he prefers to tell people that all Republicans, including McConnell, have been opposed to Obamacare and to funding it.

Asked about polls that show him running second to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for the GOP's 2016 presidential nomination, Paul said, "I'm just so glad I'm not No. 1, because it's much better to be an underdog than to be the leader."

He called such early speculation a "great parlor game," but added that most people would rather have a job now than worry about who the presidential nominee will be three years from now.
