Democrats will continue to lose elections if they do not focus on winning back young minority voters, instead of going after blue-collar supporters of President Donald Trump, according to a pollster who worked with President Barack Obama's campaign.

"We are not going to get back to national majorities again without these voters," Cornell Belcher said, The Hill reported.

Belcher held focus groups in Florida and Wisconsin for the Civic Engagement Fund, founded by progressive leader Andrea Hailey. The group looks at data from previous elections and applies it to engaging voters.

Millennial voters who are racial minorities felt "undervalued, ignored, and taken for granted," according to research obtained by the Hill. As of 2015, 44.2 percent of millennials are people of color, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

"If Republicans want to get real about **** that's happening in my community, I would vote for everyone of them. Then maybe Democrats would take us serious too," one respondent in the Florida focus group said.

Voters who skipped the election or voted third party do not regret their choice, the Civic Engagement Fund wrote in its report. "They view their decision as an effective means to shake up the system in 2016 and in future elections."

Eight percent of black voters ages 18 to 29 voted third party, and that breakaway cost Hillary Clinton the election, Belcher said.

"It's not about what Donald Trump did. It's what she failed to do," Belcher said, the Hill reported.

"It is important for the Democrats to regain their standing with working class voters, but not at the expense of other core constituencies like African-Americans or immigrants. That would be a huge mistake," said Julian Zelizer, a Princeton University history and public affairs professor.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., said Democrats must be seen as more willing to adapt.

"We are going to lose every possible winnable seat, in a year where there are many winnable seats, if we come across as inflexible left-wingers," Cleaver said in The New York Times.
