Just 21 percent of American voters approve of the Republican healthcare bill passed by the House, while 56 percent disapprove, a new Quinnipiac University poll reveals.

Here are the highlights from the survey:

  • 48 percent of Republicans approve of the GOP healthcare plan, while 16 percent disapprove.
  • 6 percent of Democrats approve of the GOP plan, while 81 percent disapprove.
  • 18 percent of independents support the bill, compared to 60 percent who disapprove.
  • 44 percent of those polled say President Donald Trump should support efforts to repeal Obamacare, while 53 percent say he should not.
  • 28 percent of those polled approve of the way President Donald Trump is handing the issue of healthcare, while 66 percent disapprove.

"Republicans gave up on their first attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare when a March 23 Quinnipiac University poll showed 17 percent of American voters supported their bill," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the poll.

"The second attempt wins the support of 21 percent of voters. The grim diagnosis from voters: Health care will cost more and deliver less."

Here is how the rest of the survey breaks down:

  • 30 percent approve of Trump's tax plan, while 52 percent disapprove.
  • 29 percent believe Trump's tax plan will help the nation, compared to 49 percent who say it will hurt the country.
  • 33 percent support building a wall along the border with Mexico, while 64 percent oppose it.
  • 87 percent say they are either "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" about the situation with North Korea, while 11 percent say they are not so concerned or not concerned at all.
  • 69 percent says Trump should publicly release his tax returns, while 26 percent say he should not.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,078 voters nationwide from May 4-9 with a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
