Almost four in 10 people said Democrat Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election due to "outside factors" in a new survey.

The Rasmussen Reports poll found that 39 percent of likely U.S. voters felt things beyond Clinton's control cost her the presidency. Republican Donald Trump defeated her in the Nov. 8 election.

Among those 39 percent, 40 percent said FBI Director James Comey's decision to take another look at Clinton's email case just days before the election was the top outside factor contributing to her loss.

Other findings from the survey:

  • Clinton lost because her candidacy was weak: 43 percent.
  • Blamed Clinton's loss on the strength of Trump's candidacy: 13 percent.
  • Outside factors were to blame; felt Russia's alleged interference was the top reason: 21 percent.

Many Democrats pointed to Comey and Russia's alleged hacking and spreading of fake news as a reason why Clinton lost.
