A majority of Americans believe that civility in politics has declined since President Donald Trump took office, according to a PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll released Monday.

The results:

  • 70 percent said the overall tone and level of civility has gotten worse.
  • 20 percent said it stayed the same.
  • Only 6 percent said it has improved.
  • 4 percent are unsure.
  • 60 percent said they trust the intelligence community and the courts more than they trust Congress and the media.
  • 61 percent said they place little trust in the Trump administration; breaking down the results by party affiliation — 70 percent of independents have little trust in Trump, while 90 percent of Democrats said the same and 84 percent of Republicans strongly trust the president.

On the trustworthiness of the media:

  • 8 percent trust the media a great deal.
  • 22 percent trust the media a good amount.
  • 31 percent don't trust the media very much.
  • 37 percent don't trust the media at all.
  • 2 percent are unsure.

The PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist College Institute for Public Opinion poll contacted 1,205 U.S. adults using landline and mobile phones between June 21 and June 25. There is a 2.8 percent margin of error.
