President Donald Trump's approval rating dropped to 46 percent, with 50 percent disapproving, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll, the first time in his presidency for this survey that more voters disapprove of his performance than approve.

The results:

  • Thirty-eight percent said they strongly disapprove of his performance, while only 23 percent strongly approve.
  • The decline in Trump's approval rating was sharper among Republicans and independents than among Democrats. In the latest poll, 81 percent of Republicans and 39 percent of independents approve of Trump, a drop since last week from 85 percent and 44 percent respectively. Among those who said they voted for Trump, his approval rating fell from 90 percent last week to 84 percent.
  • Only 26 percent say they are "very confident" in Trump's ability to serve as president and 21 percent say they are "somewhat confident." But 13 percent are "not too confident," and 36 percent aren't "at all" confident in his ability to serve as president.
  • Only 37 percent of voters want the GOP to continue their efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare, while 51 percent want Republicans to move on to other issues. However, among Republicans, 62 percent want them to keep fighting on the issue, while only 30 percent prefer they move on.
  • Obamacare continues to rise in popularity, as 50 percent of voters now approve of the 2010 law, up from 46 percent last week and only 41 percent who backed it in January.
  • Forty-one percent say Russia influenced the results of the U.S elections, while 40 percent said they did not.

On the issue of Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch:

  • Forty-four percent said the Senate should confirm him, while only 23 percent said it should not, while 33 percent don't know or didn't have an opinion.
  • However, only 21 percent said the threshold for approving a nomination should be lowered to a simple majority, while 55 percent said it should remain at 60 votes.
  • Among Democratic voters, 25 percent said Gorsuch should be confirmed, 36 percent didn't know or didn't have an opinion and 39 percent said he should be blocked.

The poll was conducted March 24-25, which was after Trump and House Republicans canceled a vote on the American Health Care Act, which was meant to replace many of the Obamacare provisions. The poll surveyed 1,991 voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
