Mitt Romney, who is considered the "elder statesman" of the GOP and has gone out of his way to trash the party's front-runner Donald Trump — is beginning to wear thin with Republicans, a new Public Policy Polling survey reveals.

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts and failed GOP presidential candidate in 2012, had been eyed by some in the party as a potential Trump spoiler if a brokered Republican convention emerges this summer.

But PPP, who quizzed 505 Republican primary voters, found that a Romney run is now "completely unacceptable."

"Only 28 percent say they'd be comfortable with him as nominee [compared] to 62 percent who would not," the polling group said in a statement.

As well, Romney's favorability rating has also plummeted.

"He's just generally unpopular [with] that 28/62 spread … also his favorability rating," PPP said.

Romney has been anything but silent as the race for the GOP presidential nomination shifts into high gear.

Last month, Romney savaged Trump, calling him a "fraud" whose victory in the general election would mean "prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished."

He also said, "Dishonesty is Trump's hallmark."

Romney has also ruffled feathers among Trump's opponents. Last week, an article in Vanity Fair said Romney was guilty of stabbing Ohio Gov. John Kasich in the back by first campaigning for him, then saying he would vote for Sen. Ted Cruz.

PPP also asked respondents' feelings about the Republican establishment in general. Only 28 percent have a positive opinion of it compared to 55 percent who have a negative opinion.

The North Carolina-based polling company, which released its findings on Tuesday, conducted its survey from March 24-26. It has a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percent.
