Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's favorability with Republicans has plummeted, apparently suffering from voters' frustration over "the lack of legislative success" despite a GOP majority in Congress, a new poll shows.

The Gallup survey released Wednesday finds 35 percent of Republican voters are likely to have an unfavorable opinion of McConnell, while 30 percent have a positive view of him.

That's a big slump from 18 months ago, when 47 percent of GOP voters viewed him positively, and 23 percent held a negative view of the Kentucky Republican, Gallup finds.

"Republicans' views of McConnell and [outgoing House Speaker John] Boehner may be suffering this year because the party base is frustrated with the lack of legislative success," the pollster noted.

Among all voters, McConnell notched his worst-yet rating, at 18 percent, Gallup finds – down even from the the 22 percent he's averaged since the last government shutdown in October 2013. A sizable 41 percent have unfavorable opinion of him, with 40 percent saying they're not familiar enough with him to rate him, Gallup reports.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

"Whether McConnell can regain past goodwill among his party's supporters is unclear," the pollster's analysis states.

"If the party base is upset with him mainly because the GOP has failed to get legislation it favors passed into law, then prospects of a near-term recovery of his image appear slim. … If the party base is upset with McConnell mainly because it perceives the leadership has not tried hard enough to advance GOP legislation, then a more aggressive approach… may win the majority leader back some of his lost support."
