President Donald Trump's job approval stands at 40 percent — helped by strong support from Republicans who do not blame him for the unsuccessful healthcare bill, according to a CBS News poll.

Here are highlights from the survey:

  • 49 percent of those polled said the GOP healthcare bill failed because it "just wasn't popular" — a response also given by 41 percent of Republicans.
  • 30 percent of Republicans said it failed because "Democrats didn't compromise.
  • 40 percent of those polled said they believed Russia interfered in the 2016 elections with the intent of helping Trump. However, only 13 percent of Republicans agreed with that assessment, compared to 67 percent of Democrats.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., received a 33 percent job approval rating from those surveyed. But 60 percent of Republicans approved of the way he was handling his job

"The president's approval rating is about where it has been since he took office in January," CBS News reported. "It was at 39 percent in late February and 40 percent in early February."

The poll was conducted by telephone, March 25-28, 2017 among a random sample of 1,088 adults nationwide. The margin of error is plus or minus four percentage points.
