A new report questions whether some of the Republican Party's elders could jump ship and publicly support Democrat Hillary Clinton for president over GOP nominee Donald Trump.

Politico reports that the Clinton campaign has reached out to former Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and Henry Kissinger, along with other high-ranking Republican officials James Baker and George Shultz.

All of the Republicans contacted by the campaign have yet to endorse Trump for president.

One expert told Politico the elders have a responsibility to speak out, given Trump's recent comments about NATO and other issues surrounding national security.

"I think it is terribly disappointing," historian Robert Kagan told Politico. "They are some of the most respected people in the country, as well as in the party, and their words would carry real weight. For them to sit this crisis out is, to me, a real abdication of responsibility."

Some elders have already switched their political affiliations — at least for this election — and pledged their support of Clinton. That list includes Richard Armitage, who worked under Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell switched sides and supported Barack Obama's presidential campaign in 2008 and 2012. He has yet to announce who he will support in the 2016 election.
