Phil Robertson Pushes Nephew's La. Candidacy

"Duck Dynasty" patriarch Phil Robertson doesn't pull any punches when it comes to backing his nephew Zach Dasher's run for the House, or speaking his mind about cutting down the size of government.

Appearing on Fox News with Sean Hannity, Robertson said, "I would cut the government in about half of what it is now, and I'd clean out more bureaucracy than I shoot ducks."

Story continues below video.

Robertson has been stumping for Dasher, who's looking to replace Rep. Vance McAllister, R-La., for the seat from Louisiana's 5th Congressional District. The religious Robertson clan originally supported McAllister but broke with him when the married McAllister was caught on video kissing a female staffer.

Since then, Dasher, 36, has been hot on McAllister's heels in the nine-candidate race, at 15.1 percent to 15.7 percent, but both are lagging behind Republican Ralph Abraham, who has 24.5 percent, according to a poll from the Glasscock Group, the Monroe Star reports.

Josh Stockley, political science professor at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, told The Town Talk, "I really do believe that this race is too close to call," and likely is headed for a runoff.

Robertson told Hannity, "We trained this dude. We vetted him. He came forth from my sister's loins. This one we know," and ribbed Hannity, "You're not going to vote for this dude?"

Hannity said he can't because he doesn't live in Louisiana, but Phil had a fix for that — "You need to get out of New York City, son. You need to get down here, Hannity."

Dasher told Hannity, "We're [Republicans] right here on the cusp of taking over again. It's not just enough for Republicans to gain control. We also have to be bold. We have to provide true leadership and I think that we have to provide ideas for free markets and a free society and that's what my candidacy is all about.

"I'm not going up there to be a rubber stamp for the party — I'll tell you that right now."
In political ads, Robertson has appeared repeatedly with Dasher, saying, "He loves his family. He's got a servant's heart. He knows his Bible. He is a good man."

Robertson told Hannity, "I've been counseling Zach with the same counsel I gave you, Hannity — never leave home without your Bible and your woman, especially if you're going to get into politics."

Dasher said America's problems arise from "shredding" the Declaration of Independence, which "tells us where our rights come from. Our rights come from the creator.

"When we look at something like Obamacare, which is unconstitutional, it is a federal takeover of our state rights and individual liberties, or whether it's Common Core, which is a federal takeover of our state rights and individual liberties, all these come back to the same thing. We need to preserve the Constitution but we can't do that until we preserve the Declaration of Independence."
