The dug-in House Freedom Caucus, a conservative firebrand, was not willing to move on Speaker Paul Ryan's, R-Wis, American Health Care Act, and the only way to get something done in Washington is to pull in Democratic support and "make a deal," Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., said.

"We're going to have to realize whether it's healthcare, whether it's tax reform coming up, that we're going to have to find a way to get legislation through that is not just all Republican," King told Sunday's "The Cats Roundtable" on 970 AM-N.Y.

"Because then it becomes all or nothing, and it's going to end up becoming nothing."

That is where Ryan's AHCA wound up, because it did not get one Democratic vote and the 25-30 conservatives of the Freedom Caucus were not going to budge from their far right stance on healthcare for Speaker Ryan and President Donald Trump.

"[The Freedom Caucus] was insisting on virtually a total repeal of Obamacare, which sounds good," King said, adding the tentacles of Obamacare are just too deep rooted to be pulled out the way the conservative caucus would like.

"You can't end that overnight."

King suggested the next move for the White House is to work with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on getting bipartisan support for another piece of major legislation to get this Congress' wheels greased, because "we can't get it done by ourselves."

"We have to find a way to reach out to get at least some Democrats involved," King told host John Catsimatidis. "I think President Trump can do it."

That big reach across the aisle can come in an infrastructure bill, King said, one they can make "three-quarters" favorable to Republicans and extend a fig leaf to the equally dug in Democrats to work around the tightened Freedom Caucus.

King said the infrastructure bill – splitting the $1 trillion proposed program between private and public funding – will turn the tide of Democrats resisting President Trump's agenda, because if the left "revolts" they will lose the trust of middle Americans.
