Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence called Hillary Clinton "the most dishonest candidate for president of the United States since Richard Nixon" in light of the FBI's release of documents from its confidential interview with the Democratic nominee.

"It is a tough charge," Pence acknowledged when he was pressed by Chuck Todd in an interview to air Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." "But, come on.

"What's evident from all of the revelations over the last several weeks is that Hillary Clinton operated in such a way to keep her emails — and particularly her interactions while secretary of state with the Clinton Foundation, out of the public reach, out of public accountability," the Indiana governor said.

The FBI on Friday released nearly 60 pages of documents of its three-and-a-half hour private interview with Clinton on Saturday, July 2, at her home in Washington.

The heavily redacted information showed that Clinton used numerous communications devices — Blackberrys, cell phones, laptops — during her four years as the nation's top diplomat and could not recall many times whether she had transmitted or received classified information through her private email.

The FBI summary "truly does disqualify her from serving as President of the United States," Pence said.

He added that he would release his tax returns next week.

"Donald Trump and I are both going to release our tax returns," Pence said. "I'll release mine in the next week."

The governor, however, would not specify a timeline on when the presidential nominee would make his returns public.

"Donald Trump will be releasing his tax returns at the completion of an audit," Pence said.

When Todd asked whether it would occur before the Nov. 8 election, Pence responded, "Well, we'll see."
