Pelosi on Trump: 'The Greatness of America Can Withstand Anything'

Democrats in the House wish President-elect Donald Trump well, even while nearly 70 of them are refusing to attend his inauguration, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Friday.

"I think everyone should take a deep breath and just say the greatness of America can withstand anything, including the election of Donald Trump," the California Democrat and former House Speaker told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. "But we wish him well."

However, she compared Democrats' stance to that taken by Republicans when they took the majority two years into President Barack Obama's first term of office, noting they said, "the most important thing we can do is to make sure he doesn't succeed."

"In the meantime we were able to accomplish the Obama legacy which we were a part of," said Pelosi. "We went in there opposed to the war, opposed to privatizing Social Security. We passed some of the most significant legislation, the biggest energy bill in the history of our country."

Still, there are many members of Congress who say they agree with Georgia Democratic Rep. John Lewis, who said he questions the legitimacy of Trump's election, and who decided to stay away after Trump attacked the civil rights icon over his comments.

"I keep asking for the numbers," said Pelosi. "How many Republicans did not show up for Barack Obama's inaugurations? And there are a number of them, although they say we don't have the records. You can see how many people showed up and figure out how many were Republicans, so there were quite a few."

The inauguration boycott, she continued, was "spontaneous, organic," and "members have made their own decision" and had not planned to attend, even before Trump made his remarks about Lewis.

Pelosi disagreed when it was pointed out that she sounds like she has her own questions about Trump's legitimacy as president.

"Well, he was elected," said Pelosi. "I remind you that Hillary Clinton got millions more votes but if the Electoral College ... he's elected by the Electoral College. He's there."

There is an investigation looming about Russia's role in the election, however Trump will be sworn in before that happens, and "we go forward with faith in our country," said Pelosi. "I believe again in the greatness of America to withstand anything, the presence of God and the urgency that the American people see in their lives."
