Paul Ryan Could Get Top Ways and Means Post in 2015

By    |   Wednesday, 07 Aug 2013 12:23 PM

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan could be competing with his Republican colleague Kevin Brady for the chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee come 2015, but most congressional insiders see him winning the top tax-writing spot if he wants it.

"The view is that Ryan will be anointed," one lobbyist told The Hill.

First elected from Texas in 1996, Brady has seniority over Ryan, having served in the House two years longer. He currently heads the Joint Economic Committee and the health subcommittee on Ways and Means.

But as the former 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee and long-time Budget Committee chairman, Ryan has a higher profile than either Brady or current Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp of Michigan, who could seek a waiver of the three-term limit for chairmen and stay on for a fourth term.

Still, many Republicans expect Ryan to get the Ways and Means job if he ends up resisting pressure from GOP donors to enter the 2016 presidential race or accept a leadership spot in the new Congress after the 2014 elections.

"Paul's in a very good position. Obviously high profile. Understands the politics and the policy," one GOP lawmaker told the Hill.
