House Speaker Paul Ryan suggested Thursday that politicians should not leave illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children out to dry when the next administration takes office.

"We should have something that balances the concerns of all parties involved and make sure that we don't pull the rug out from under people," Ryan told reporters during a news conference, his final one of 2016, reports The Hill.

Called DREAMers, there is a large population of people living in the U.S. whose parents brought them here illegally when they were younger. President-elect Donald Trump said this week he'll "work something out" in regards to them.

Ryan said a joint effort between Trump's transition team and the House Judiciary Committee is looking at the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allowed DREAMers to remain in the U.S.

"I will defer to the people who are focused on this on a daily basis to make sure they get this policy right, so that we don't have any kind of ugly disruption that people are concerned about," Ryan said.

Trump allies are warning that the incoming president intends to make good on his strict immigration promises that helped get him elected.
