Rand Paul: GOP Trying to Make Obamacare 'Less Bad'

By    |   Thursday, 19 Sep 2013 01:12 PM

Republicans are attempting to make Obamacare "less bad" by pushing to defund the healthcare law, Sen. Rand Paul said Thursday.

"We want [President Barack Obama] to dial it back. We want him to compromise. And we want to make this bill less bad, if possible," Paul said on Fox News.

"I don't want to shut the government down. But I also don’t want to shove down the throats of Americans an awful piece of legislation that's going to cause unemployment, higher insurance costs, and is going to cause some part-time workers to lose their hours," the Kentucky Republican added.

Paul said Republicans need to keep the focus of their effort aimed at the president and his unwillingness to compromise.

"This is about a president who wants 100 percent of Obamacare or he's going to shut the government down," Paul said, arguing that the White House and the Democrats have been primarily responsible for raising concerns about a government shutdown.

"It's all Democrats saying, 'Somebody's going to shut down the government.' We're not in favor of shutting the government down. We're in favor of funding all of government, minus Obamacare," said Paul, who often is mentioned as a 2016 Republican presidential contender.

Paul said his Kentucky constituents have made it clear to him that they "want [Congress] to stand up against big government and this overreach of Obamacare. And they want Obama to dial it back. They want President Obama to compromise."
