Paul Manafort may still be a bit of an enigma in American politics, but Donald Trump's senior adviser has a thorough political and business resume in the Ukraine, according to a story in The New York Times.

Beginning in late 2004, Manafort went to work behind the scenes to help get Viktor Yanukovych, a disciple of Russia President Vladimir Putin, back into power and eventually elected president in 2010, according to the Times.

Yanukovych would eventually be forced out of the country during the 2014 uprising that continues now, but Manafort continued to work at the behest of the former president, who fled to Russia.

Manafort's track record in U.S. politics is vastly underwhelming in comparison. MSNBC's "Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough, a former congressman and political insider, said he had never heard of Manafort.

The Times reported that Manafort worked in Republican politics in the 1970s, but then moved on to advise authoritarian leaders like Mobutu Sese Seko in Zaire and Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines before moving on to Yanukovych.

According to a story in Salon, Manafort — along with Roger Stone — was introduced to Trump by Roy Cohn, lawyer and right-hand man of Sen. Joe McCarthy, back in the 70s.

Manafort's business connections into Russia are extensive and include Dmytro Firtash, an oligarch who made billions working with Russian natural gas giant Gazprom, and oligarch Oleg Deripaska, according to the Times.

All of which ties back to Trump and the influence Manafort — a Connecticut-born political operative whose resume was built abroad — wields on the Republican nominee. Trump has been complimentary of Putin and said the U.S. should recognize the Crimea as Russian property. He has also questioned U.S.support of NATO.

The New York Times reported that it's unclear if Manafort's work in the Ukraine ended once he went to work advising Trump.
