Former Congressman Ron Paul told CNN Tuesday that his son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, would "probably" run for president in 2016.

"I think he probably will. I mean he's been on TV hinting that he very well might," the Texas Republican, a three-time presidential contender himself, said in an appearance on CNN's "OutFront" program.

He added that his son has been handling himself "quite well" politically.

"Well, I think he's going to make up his own mind. And I had my opportunity to give him advice when he was much younger," Paul continued. "He's been a pretty independent person, which you would expect, and he's very libertarian-like. And therefore he will make up his own mind."

Paul, a physician by training, has written widely on economics from a conservative and libertarian perspective. The younger Paul is considered more pragmatic than his father on both domestic and foreign policy issues.

Rand Paul has said he is weighing a run for the GOP nomination, but that his family consideration — specifically his wife's reported opposition — would be a key factor in his decision. For now, he says he plans to work on keeping his Senate seat in 2016.
