White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday blamed the failure of the Republican healthcare plan on Democrats, saying "they're responsible for creating the mess that we're in."

"They're responsible for passing Obamacare," she told reporters, according to audio of the daily White House briefing.

"They're responsible for being unwilling to work with Republicans in any capacity to help fix a system that they know is completely flawed and have publicly said so.

"I think that it's pretty clear, and I think the responsibility lies on their shoulders."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell delayed a vote on a healthcare plan after his third effort – an outright Obamacare repeal and a replacement developed over two years – effectively died after three Republicans said they would not support it.

"Sometime in the near future, we'll have a vote on repealing Obamacare, essentially the same vote that we had in 2015," the Kentucky Republican told reporters.

"In that proposal, there's a two-year delay, which would give us the opportunity to work out a complete replacement on a bipartisan basis with our Democratic friends."

Shortly thereafter, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats were willing to work with the GOP on healthcare.

"We Democrats have held the door to bipartisanship open to our Republican colleagues for months," the New York Democrat said. "It's time for the Republicans to walk through it."

President Donald Trump beforehand slammed Democrats for their opposition and said he would "let Obamacare fail."

"I'm not going to own it," he told reporters at the White House. "I can tell you that the Republicans are not going to own it.

"We'll let Obamacare fail, and then the Democrats are going to come to us, and they're going to say how do we fix it?"
