Donald Trump says he may need as much as $1.5 billion to fund his bid for the presidency in the general election amid signs the Republican Party is woefully behind the Democrats in raising money, The New York Times reports.

As a result, the GOP presidential front-runner on Monday made plans to "appropriate much of the Republican National Committee's financial and political infrastructure" for his campaign as possible, according to the newspaper.

Not that it will be easy.

"No one should underestimate how hard it would be for any nominee to raise hundreds of millions of dollars in a very short period of time," Mike DuHaime, top strategist for the presidential campaign of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, told The Times.

The newspaper says that by the end of March, Trump had already spent about $40 million of his own money to fund his White House bid.

But some of his success in getting funding will rely on his ability to unify the deeply fractured party.
