Republicans have "no workable plan" to replace the Affordable Care Act and may not be able to create one, The New York Times editorial board wrote on Tuesday.

The Times called on Republicans to stop with the attempts to remove the law and "pull back from the chaos they have sown."

Republicans did not meet a Jan. 27 deadline that they set up to end the law and Sens. Lamar Alexander and Orrin Hatch have mentioned "repairing" Obamacare, The Times added.

House Speaker Paul Ryan is attempting to appeal to the "burn-it-all-down" wing of the Republicans by insisting that the act will be repealed and replaced.

The Times noted Republicans may be realizing that removing Obamacare and replacing it with a better plan will be difficult. More than 22 million Americans now have extended health insurance thanks to the act, and many of those insured are making phone calls and showing up at town halls in support of it.

No plan Republicans have in the works would do what the act has done, the editorial wrote. A bill by Rep. Tom Price would cut back subsidies that help people buy insurance, for example.

The White House is reportedly looking into ways to charge more money for older people on the act's exchange programs, such as charging premiums 3.49 times more than younger people, according to The Huffington Post.

In January, the Trump administration canceled advertisements that called on people to get policies on the Obamacare website before the Jan. 31 deadline.

On Tuesday night, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, faced off in a debate about Obamacare that aired on CNN.

Cruz called on Sanders to join him in taking on the pharmaceutical industries that drive up prices on drugs, he said.
