Nikki Haley on Climate Change: 'It Is Real'

NBC's "Today"/Twitter

Just because President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris climate accord, that does not mean his administration does not believe in climate protection, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Tuesday, while acknowledging that climate change "is real."

"We're not saying that climate change is not real," the former South Carolina governor told NBC's "Today" show. "It is real. How do you have that balance between making sure you have jobs and businesses moving and how you protect the climate? The answer is in the middle."

Haley made her comments after the show to anchor Matt Lauer when he asked her about a sweeping new report from scientists at 13 federal agencies, which says the effects of global climate change are already being felt.

The draft report has not been made public by the government, as it had been awaiting approval from the Trump administration, but was reported on Monday by The New York Times and other news outlets.

The Times reported that according to the draft, the United States' average temperature has been rising drastically since 1980, and the recent decades have marked the warmest temperatures recorded in the past 1,500 years.

The report also concludes human contributions have brought about climate change, contradicting claims by Trump and some of his cabinet members who maintain the humane effect is uncertain.

"Evidence for a changing climate abounds, from the top of the atmosphere to the depths of the oceans," the report said. Its authors noted that thousands of studies, through tens of thousands of scientists, shows that "many lines of evidence demonstrate that human activities, especially emissions of greenhouse (heat-trapping) gases, are primarily responsible for recent observed climate change."

On Tuesday, Haley said that she sees no reason why the Trump administration will not eventually embrace the report's results, even though she said she has not seen the report herself.

"Just because we pulled out of the Paris accord doesn't mean we don't believe in climate protection," said Haley. "We're saying we're not going to sell out American businesses to do that."
