Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said that although Democrats went into President Donald Trump's speech to Congress on Tuesday determined not to applaud, he won more and more of them over as the speech went on.

"He began to build momentum all evening of more and more Democrats getting up, more and more applauding," Gingrich, who was sitting in the chamber on the same side as the Democrats, told Fox News Channel's "Hannity."

Trump opening talking about Black History Month, condemning anti-Semitism and the shooting of two Indian-Americans in Kansas probably "startled" the Democrats, he said.

"This is not what they expect from a Republican president."

Gingrich, author of the Contract With America in the early 1990s that helped bring Republican control back to C0ngress and forced Democratic President Bill Clinton to move to the right, said he kept his eye trained on far-left Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

"Every once in a while towards the end, she broke down and applauded," he said.

Gingrich compared Trump to President Ronald Reagan, though not in oratorical skill. He said Trump actually is more like former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in that the left in Great Britain hated her so much they kept going further and further until even the press nicknamed them the "loony left."

Left-wing activists watching the address are likely to feel they've been sold out that Democrats didn't walk out and didn't boo, he said.
