Gingrich: Republicans Now Need to Go Sell Their Bill

Now that the American Health Care Act has passed a House vote, Republican lawmakers need to go home and be clear with their constituents how the reform measure keeps their insurance coverage safe, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Friday.

"They have to show in the bill this is how we're going to handle Medicaid and let's be clear," Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" anchor Bill Hemmer. "The Democrats' answer is 'let's bankrupt the whole country, spend whatever we can come up with and only go to a single payer system to make [Sen.] Bernie Sanders happy. If you think government should be the monopoly deliverer of healthcare this ain't your cup of tea."

However, opponents such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and others are saying the passage means House Republicans will lose elections moving forward, and Gingrich said he thinks people like Pelosi are 'so absurd."

"They produced a bill which cost them the majority," Gingrich said. "When they passed Obamacare, they got killed. They've spent all these years in the minority. Obamacare is collapsing. One reason a congressman from Iowa decided this week he had to vote for the bill is the last major insurance company that was covering Iowans pulled out, announced this week it's gone."

And as the Senate starts working on the AHCA in upcoming days, Obamacare will continue to collapse, said Gingrich.

"It doesn't help to have pre-existing coverage guaranteed if there is no health insurance," said Gingrich.

The AHCA has become much improved in the five weeks since it was pulled from the House floor without a vote, said Gingrich, including guaranteeing Americans will continue having access to health insurance.

Gingrich said he believes the Senate, now that it has the healthcare reform bill, will make additions that will make it somewhat different, but he's not sure what that will involve.

"It is pretty simple," Gingrich said. "What are the five or six or seven things the American people most want? Can we find a way to deliver those? One is pre-existing conditions. People want to be sure that their loved ones aren't going to be cut off. So they have to get to a solution that says yes, here is how we solve it."
