Two Native American organizations have joined together in support of Neil Gorsuch's nomination to the Supreme Court, the Washington Examiner reports.

The National Congress of American Indians and the Native American Rights Fund have sent off a letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, backing Gorsuch.

"As noted repeatedly during the hearing, Judge Gorsuch has significant experience with cases involving the interests of Indian tribes and Indian people," wrote NCAI president Brian Cladoosby and NARF executive director John Echohawk in the letter.

"His opinions recognize tribes as sovereign governments, and address issues of significance to tribes, including state police incursion onto tribal lands, sovereign immunity, religious freedom, accounting for trust funds, exhaustion of tribal remedies, and Indian country criminal jurisdiction.

"Based on this experience and his records, we have confidence that Judge Gorsuch will be open-minded to all perspectives."

In his opening remarks to the Judiciary Committee, Gorsuch had singled out his past rulings on issues dealing with Native Americans, NBC News noted.

"In my decade on the bench, I have tried to treat all who come to court fairly and with respect," he said. "I have decided cases for Native Americans seeking to protect tribal lands …"

The Examiner noted the letter from the two Native American groups could put pressure on some Democrats in Western states, like Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Sen. Jon Tester of Montana, who are considering whether to filibuster or support Gorsuch's nomination.

Katie Martin, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee added: "With added pressure from their constituents, countless editorial boards, and groups like the National Congress of American Indians and Native American Rights Fund, Democrats, especially those from the West, need to weigh their options carefully, because the outcome of a bad vote on Judge Gorsuch could be their ticket to a retirement in 2018."
