Nancy Pelosi Rips Trump: 'Deflector-in-Chief'

CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360"

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Tuesday slammed President Donald Trump as "deflector-in-chief" and said that the 2018 congressional races will be "the first referendum" on the president.

"Ineffective," the California Democrat responded when CNN's Anderson Cooper asked her opinion of Trump's first two months in office. "They've accomplished nothing.

"Deflector-in-chief.

"He hasn't produced of infrastructure bill. Jobs bill. Accomplished nothing.

"He has to deflect by coming up with bans on certain religions coming into the country," she added. "When that doesn't succeed, deflect to the president of the United States wiretapping him."

Pelosi, 76, who was first elected to the House in 1986, said that President Trump was either lying about the Obama wiretapping claim or "he didn't know what he was talking about.

"First of all, President Obama would not do that," she said. "Cannot do that.

"He has nothing to support the claim he made."

Trump has "upped the ante" with the wiretap allegations — versus his many other accusations — and "he should apologize, not only to President Obama but to the American people," Pelosi said.

"When you decide you're going to say the president of the United States has wire-tapped you, which isn't true, you have invited comment.

"It's not that this is no longer frivolous," she told Cooper. "This is serious and he should not have done it."

When Cooper asked who currently leads the Democratic Party, Pelosi could only name Obama or former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

"President Obama was the president of the United States until just a matter of weeks ago. I don't think that he can be dismissed as the leader of the Democratic Party.

"Hillary Clinton did not win the election, but she is still a respected leader," she added.

"We have leaders for all different aspects of it. The Democratic Party is a congressional party.

"We have members in Congress."

Cooper then noted that Democrats took a drubbing on the state level last November. "We have a plan to address that," Pelosi said.

"There's not one standard-bearer who you see as the leader of the Democratic Party?" the CNN anchor asked.

"We're not in a presidential time," she responded.

Turning to 2020, however, Pelosi said that she was more concerned about the congressional midterms.

"I'm thinking of 2018," she said. "The first referendum on Donald Trump will come forward."
