Attorney General Jeff Sessions' recusing himself from investigations regarding the presidential election "is an admission that something was wrong" and "a reflection of the weak moral authority of this administration," according to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

The California Democrat made the remark at a Politico Playbook breakfast Friday morning. After reports emerged that Sessions, who acted as a surrogate for President Donald Trump's campaign, spoke with the Russian Ambassador to the U.S. during the previous election, Pelosi was one of the first to call for his resignation.

"This is just totally unacceptable, and the very idea that they're making excuses and splitting hairs and this or that — we have not seen the end of this," Pelosi said. "The recusal is an admission that something was wrong. The very idea that the top cop would go to his colleagues in the Senate and withhold the truth. This is not an unsophisticated person. This is a prosecutor himself. He knows what's there. And it's just a reflection of the weak moral authority of this administration if they support what he is doing."

Trump has maintained his support for Sessions despite the calls, accusing Democrats of benefiting from unlawful leaks in an attempt to save face.

"Jeff Sessions is an honest man. He did not say anything wrong. He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional," Trump said in a statement, according to CNN. "This whole narrative is a way of saving face for Democrats losing an election that everyone thought they were supposed to win. The Democrats are overplaying their hand. They lost the election and now, they have lost their grip on reality. The real story is all of the illegal leaks of classified and other information. It is a total witch hunt!"
