House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Thursday that Democrats are in a "much better place" to win a majority in 2018 than they were in 2005.

"We have a very exciting time ahead of us," Pelosi said, according to the Washington Examiner. "We are in a much better place now than we were in '05 in terms of our attempt to win the Congress. Elections are about a couple of things, they're about who wins, and ... do the American people win in terms of the debate?"

She added, "I feel very optimistic about it."

Pelosi chided a reporter on Thursday for asking a question about the 2018 election during her weekly briefing in the Capitol.

"You want to talk politics?" she asked, according to The Washington Free Beacon. "Right here under the dome of the Capitol of the United States, you want to talk politics? Well, we can do that for a small percentage of the meeting, so I'm happy to do that."

She went on to say that Democrats will focus on making sure that their "candidates will be representatives. That's their job title and that's their job description, so they should be a match to the district, especially if they are going to represent and win the district. This is something from the right to the left has approval in our caucus."

The former House speaker also commented on Democrats' new "Better Deal" drive, comparing it to the message the party used in 2005.

"When we won the House in '05 and '06, we started right after 2004 election and knew we had to have a positive message as we went forward, and it took time to develop it," Pelosi said.

Democrats picked up 31 seats in 2006, retaking the House. In 2018 they'll need to take 24 to do the same.
