McConnell Camp Doesn't Want Matt Bevin to Become Ky. Governor

Tea Party favorite Matt Bevin lost to Sen. Mitch McConnell in the Republican primary in Kentucky last year, and the Senate majority leader apparently doesn't want to see his former challenger become the next governor in the Bluegrass State, despite Bevin's growing popularity in the party, The Washington Post is reporting.

According to the The Louisville Courier-Journal, Bevin's fatal flaw was not endorsing McConnell after he lost to the incumbent senator during the primary.

McConnell's former chief of staff and campaign adviser Josh Holmes said in a statement that Bevin is an opportunist who can't be trusted.

"If Matt Bevin had moved to a state where he had a better shot at being elected to office as a Democrat, he would articulate the values of liberalism with the same conviction he now talks about conservatism," Holmes said.

"It's abundantly clear that his guiding light is to embrace whatever gets himself a little further down the road," he added. "If somehow Matt Bevin got into the governor's mansion, his only agenda would be the commissioning of his portrait."

Bevin announced in January that he was planning on running for governor. The Republican primary in Kentucky is May 19.
