Senate Democrats should confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, according to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who cited a President Jimmy Carter appointee who praised the nominee.

Judge John Kane wrote an op-ed for legal website Mimesislaw.com, which he ended with: "As the saying goes, we could do worse. A hell of a lot worse. I'm not sure we could expect better, or that better presently exists."

McConnell told the Washington Examiner, "In other words, no one is better."

"It's high praise" for a Democrat-appointed judge who holds a "clear-eyed understanding of the standards a jurist must uphold."

Gorsuch "deserves fair consideration and an up or down vote," McConnell concluded.

Democratic Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico proposed confirming Gorsuch and former President Barack Obama's choice to fill the late Antonin Scalia's seat, Judge Merrick Garland.

"It's a good chance for Trump to try to unite the country," Udall told CNN. "He's got a book that's widely acclaimed in terms of 'The Art of the Deal.' This is a deal that makes sense for the country. It's a deal that heals the real deep wounds we've had in this election."

The White House declined, saying the president is focused on getting Gorsuch confirmed for "the only open seat on the Supreme Court."
