President Donald Trump was "being kind" when he referred to the stream of negative media stories against him as "very fake news" during his contentious Thursday afternoon press conference, Rep. Mike Kelly insisted in a Fox News interview.

"To those of us that come from the area of the country where we come from, the president is stronger today than he was on Nov. 8," the Pennsylvania Republican told "Fox & Friends" on Friday.

"He's gaining momentum [but] not with the media because they are never going to believe this is a guy who should have been elected. That's just not who they are. They don't know how to handle him. When he talks with them, he's toying with them and they can't take that. They want people to fall in line."

Kelly said he has backed Trump all along because he knew how desperate people in his state were to get back to work, and Trump "made sense."

"He connected with them in a way that nobody down here [in Washington] understood," said Kelly, and because Trump is from the private sector, he "knows how to get things done."

Kelly said he has many friends in the coal industry, and they were looking for a president who would reverse the harm former President Barack Obama caused there.
